Equipment that Will Keep You Safe From Bird Flu
Many people are rightfully worried about possible infection with Bird Flu. It’s a very real concern, and national and international health organizations are concerned about the possibility of a pandemic that is a geographically wide spread outbreak of the virus.
There is some equipment that will help to keep you safe from an avian bird flu infection though.
At the very least, buy masks, goggles, a gown, gloves, and disinfectants. A face shield or goggles are a good idea, as the avian bird flu virus is capable of infecting people through the soft mucous membranes of the eyes. Normal swimming goggles are an acceptable alternative.
High efficiency masks are a must have as well. These masks must be type P2N95, which are of 95% efficiency, and can be purchased at a medical supply store.
Normal surgical masks, dust, and paint masks are virtually useless. Masks with organic gas filters are an alternative if you cannot get high efficiency masks.
A bag valve mask is needed in case of an emergency situation in which a patient who is infected becomes too tired to breathe by themselves. These are also called “ambo bags” and are found in first aid and medical supply stores. An enema kit for weak dehydrated patients should also be purchased.
Disinfectants, such as a bleach solution of one part bleach to five parts water, should also be kept on hand. You should expect store supplies to be depleted.
This virus can be killed by chlorine or 70% alcohol. Methylated spirits contain 95% alcohol but use caution with these, as they are highly flammable.
Alcohol based hand wash or methylated spirits should be on hand to disinfect your hands and those of family members. A light bleach solution can be used as an alternative. Alcohol based washes should contain 70% alcohol.
Fans for heating and cooling so you do not need to use outside air or central heating and air conditioning as these could bring in airborne particles that might infect you. Tape and plastic sheeting should be used to seal doors and windows.
Tape should be purchased for sealing fans and doors so that the virus cannot escape a room. A shower curtain should be placed over the entrance to a patient’s room to act as a second barrier, and could also be used to cover a mattress.
Water and food should be purchased for the event of a quarantine, or for shortages at stores caused by panic. Stock up on plenty of water.
You should always prepare yourself for a potential worst case scenario, which in this case would be a pandemic. Pandemic can cause a panic, and many people would be caught unprepared. Consider having extra supplies on hand to help friends and neighbors.
Having proper equipment on hand can greatly increase your chances of avoiding avian bird flu during a pandemic. Always remember, careful planning, preparation, and a calm clear head and common sense go a long way.
