Nursing Hints...

(The Alternative Way)..

Let's Face It:

Health Care Can Be Dangerous...
To Your Health!

nursing hintsLook - it's no the doctors fault.  Not really.

They train hard to get where they are, and, suffering under a burden of ever-increasing research. Research about the effectiveness of this drug or that procedure.

Notice what I said? This drug or that procedure.

Why? Because that's where the money is.

Pharmaceutical and medical device companies can afford to shell out for research showing the effectiveness of this medication or that procedure.

And they know how to get busy, overworked physicians to read it, believe it and prescribe it.

Let's look at some examples...

The Hazards Of Blood Pressure Medications...

Do you know how hazardous blood pressure medications can be?

Well, first, let's get something straight. When a friend of mine went to nursing school and studied about medications, she was nearly in shock with all the side effects even the most "innocent" drugs have. Yes, even the ones you can get over-the-counter. Like aspirin. And tylenol.

For blood pressure, there are several classes of medication, called "anti-hypertensives." One line of treatment is to use what folks normally call "water pills" -- or diuretics.

But some of these diuretics mess up with the chemical balance of your body. They take out an important chemical, potassium. So if you take these, you have to make sure that you either eat enough potassium-containing foods or take a potassium pill.

What happens if your potassium isn't in balance? Your heart rhythm goes heywire. And you can die. Pretty easily in fact.

Which Treatment Would You Prefer?

A friend of mine used to have slightly elevated blood pressure.

Her physician put her on a mild diuretic.

Now, he did recommend losing weight and exercising, as well.

But one of the things he didn't mention is a very pleasurable activity -- meditation!

Another thing he didn't mention -- certain types of breathing exercises that have been shown to be effective for lowering blood pressure. The research was funded by the U.S. Government.

Oddly enough, though, if you go to U.S. Government sites -- the very ones that funded the research -- to find out about lowering your blood pressure -- these breathing exercises aren't even mentioned!

You simply aren't going to hear about the low and no cost ways to keep you healthy -- because there's no profit in it. Even when there is research to support it.

She has now lost weight, takes a 10 minute walk twice a day, 5 days a week, and usses meditation. And no longer takes the diuretic, as her blood pressure is normal.

Who's Winning The Antibiotic War?

Heard about the "Super Bugs"?

Those are the bacteria that simply will not be defeated by any antibiotics that we know of.

It didn't used to be that way.
But bacteria -- and other germs -- are clever.

In the magic and mystery of nature, they figure out a way to defeat even the strongest antibiotics.

Perhaps you've heard of "MRSA"? It's a killer form of a bacteria, named Staphylococcus Aureus, or "Staph aureus", for short. That's what the "SA" stands for.

What does the "MR" stand for? Well, it originally stood for "methicillin-resistant." (Methicillin is a particularly strong form of penicillin.) Now it stands for "multiply-resistant" -- meaning this bacteria strain resists not just methicillin (a fairly strong antibiotic) -- but many other antibiotics as well.

Where do most cases of MRSA come from? The hospital! And, should you be unfortunate enough to develop an MRSA infection -- you'll be seeing lots of masked faces and gloved hands -- from the health care workers who care for you, now, in isolation.

And The Winner Is...

If you get infected with a "Super Bug", the doctors will hit you with everything they've got.

But, like the nursing student mentioned above discovered, every drug has side effects.

And the more powerful the drug, the more likely it has powerful side effects.

Which, either you suffer the consequences, or they give you still yet another drug to deal with the side effects.

And did I mention that all these drugs also cost money -- more and more money. They keep getting more expensive as the research goes on to battle these killer critters.

If you're lucky, you'll survive your encounter with the Super bug. But at what cost -- both literally and figuratively. At what cost to your subsequent physical health, and to your financial health.

Stake A Claim For Your Health

As you can see, the cards are stacked against you. Stuff the health care system does to you can make you sicker. The healthcare system overused anbibiotics. And now what? The bugs are stronger and harder to kill -- making us all sicker.

You need information, high powered, effective information, to keep you healthy.

To keep you out of the "health care" system.

You won't find most of this information from your doctor. But like we said, it's really not their fault. It's the way the system works right now, and the system is broken.

In the meantime, we at Nursing-Hints track down the best, most effective ways for you to be, get and stay healthy.

The more you can stay out of the physician's office, the better.

If you go there, you can expect advice, prescriptions and procedures.

In fact, doctors complain because they feel that patients expect them to write a prescription, that their patients are disappointed if they don't receive one.

But if you do need to visit the physician, and he or she gives you a prescription, here are things you need to know -- and to ask your doctor about:

  • Is it necessary that I take this? Are there alternative treatments?
  • What should this do for me, what should I expect to happen to my symptoms and in what time frame?
  • What happens if it doesn't seem to be working?
  • How long will I need to take it?
  • What are the side effects of this medication and are there any that I should notify you about immediately?
  • Is this medication addictive?

From these questions you can begin to understand the real problems that are a part of health care, and especially, of prescription medications.
